West Haven -- The Norwich Free Academy football team continues to convert the doubters into believers.

Joey Paparelli ran 22 times for 102 yards and a touchdown and completed 3 of 7 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown as fifth-seeded NFA knocked off No. 1 Staples of Westport Sunday, 30-28, in a CIAC Class LL semifinal played at Ken Strong Stadium.

The Wildcats (12-0) will be making their second state championship appearance. It played in the 1998 Class LL final.

NFA has beaten the South-West Conference champion (Newtown) and Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Champion (Staples) in succession.

"Nobody gives us a chance because we play in the ECC (Eastern Connecticut Conference)," Wildcats coach Jemal Davis said, "but we proved it today. Nobody can say anything now."

The Wreckers (10-1) were the Class LL runner-ups last season.

Marcus Outlow ran 12 times for 113 yards for the Wildcats and Ryer Caruso added two catches for 81 yards and a score. Ramel Williams scored on a 32-yard run for NFA and Khaleed Exum-Strong added a 2-yard touchdown run.

Jack Massie completed 10 of 18 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns for Staples and also ran 18 times for 71 yards and a score. Patrick Lesch ran 10 times for 111 yards and a touchdown for the Wreckers and James Frusciante added six catches for 105 yards and two scores.

The score was tied, 21-21, with over seven minutes left in the game when a bad snap on a punt gave NFA a safety. Paparelli ran 63 yards down to the Staples' 8 moments into the fourth quarter. Exum-Strong's 2-yard run gave the Wildcats a 30-21 lead.

The Wreckers had a second-and-goal at the NFA on their next possession. The Wildcats' Airec Ricks ended the drive by deflecting the option pass, which was recovered by teammate Ryan Stowe. Staples had a chance to get the ball back with less than three minutes left in the game, but a punt hit one of its players heels, and Ricks recovered the ball.

"You can't do the things on special teams that we did today," Wreckers coach Marce Petroccio said, "and you can't put the ball on the ground. That's what happened. (NFA is) a good football team. They're some tough kids."

CHESHIRE -- DeAngelo Berry rushed for 156 yards on 33 carries and scored two touchdowns to help No. 3 seed Xavier-Middletown pull away from No. 7 Glastonbury for a 30-13 victory in a Class LL semifinal game Sunday at Cheshire High School.

Glastonbury took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter but Xavier (11-1) tied in the first and went into halftime up 16-7. The Tomahawks (10-2) wouldn't score again until the final second of the game as the Falcons ground game took over in the second half.

"We challenged the kids. Our defense was playing very, very well, but we weren't doing anything offensively (in the first half)," Xavier coach Sean Marinan said. "We just had to get our act together and score some points. Finally we did that."

Glastonbury scored on a 2-yard run by quarterback Joshua Hill with 5:37 left in the first quarter to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive that was keyed by two long passes. The first was a 35-yard completion from Glastonbury's second QB in its two-quarterback system, Ben Berey, to Nick Karp that got the T-Hawks into Xavier territory at the 46.

The second was from Hill to Berey for 26 yards, setting up first-and-10 at the Xavier 23. Three plays later Glastonbury scored for a 7-0 lead.

Xavier came right back with a nine-play 65-yard drive ending with Berry taking it in from the 6 to tie it at 7 with 2:15 left in the first.

The Falcons got a break when Glastonbury snapped the ball out of its end zone on an attempted punt from its 13 to give Xavier a 9-7 edge with 4:41 left in the half.

Xavier struck again later in the second quarter when quarterback Tim Boyle (11-for-21, 157 yards) found Kris Luster over the middle on a post pattern for a 22-yard touchdown and a 16-7 halftime lead.

Glastonbury's offense did little in the second half (106 yards total offense) as Xavier shut down the T-Hawks' ground game and passing game until the last play from scrimmage.

"We went into it wanting to throw the ball. We did throw the ball quite a bit but we just didn't execute," Glastonbury coach Scot Daniels said. "We talked about opportunities. We just didn't take advantage of those opportunities."

Glastonbury lost one of its quarterbacks, Hill (3-for-4, 40 yards) in the first half on a sack at its 20-yard line. Hill came back sparingly as a receiver. Berey (14-for-37, 133 yards) took the rest of the snaps from center.

Xavier took advantage of a 7-yard Glastonbury punt in the third quarter to take over at the T-Hawks' 42. The Falcons ran Berry seven straight times with the senior going in from the 1 with 6:34 left in the quarter to give Xavier a 23-7 lead.

On its next possession, Xavier struck quickly with an 80-yard TD pass from Boyle to James Sullivan on its second play from scrimmage to make it 30-7.

Glastonbury scored with 1 second left when Berey hooked up with Karp for a 10-yard TD.

EAST HARTFORD - DeAngelo Berry and Tim Boyle both played their last game for Xavier on the state's biggest stage and made sure that they went out on top.

Berry ran for 260 yards and three touchdowns and Boyle ran for a score and threw for another to lead third-seeded Xavier to a 48-14 victory over No. 5 Norwich Free Academy in the CIAC Class LL Championship game Friday night in front of a crowd of 4,576 at Rentschler Field.

Xavier (12-1) was playing in its third straight LL final while NFA (12-1) was making just its second appearance in the title game and first since 1998. It took a while, but the Falcons eventually imposed their will and earned their third straight LL crown.

"It's a testament to our players and my assistant coaches they do a fantastic job, Xavier coach Sean Marinan said. "It's everybody's goal to get here and for us to be able to do it speaks to the work ethic of the players we have."

That Xavier work ethic was embodied by Berry, the offensive line and the defense. The Falcons ran for 408 yards and had six rushing touchdowns while averaging 7.8 yards per carry. Boyle, who is headed to Boston College next fall, had to throw only five times all night.

The Falcons defense did its part, limiting NFA to 169 total yards and shutting the Wildcats out in the second half.

"They were the better team," Norwich Free Academy coach Jemal Davis said. "The main thing was how they came out and were able to run the ball. That was something we thought we were going to be able to stop."

What the Wildcats thought was one thing, the reality turned out to be something different entirely.

Berry found hole after hole and was never brought down by first contact. Boyle also found running room on the option and opened the scoring with a 4-yard run with 4:54 left in the first quarter to make it 7-0.

Boyle then helped the Falcons double-up their advantage, throwing a beautiful ball on a pump and go and hitting James Sullivan in stride around midfield and Sullivan did the rest, racing in for a 94-yard score and a 14-0 lead.

Berry made it 20-0 with 3:19 left in the first half and then the Wildcats woke up.

Ryer Caruso hauled in a 49-yard TD pass from Joey Paparelli to get NFA on the board. Placekicker Elisa Formiglio then made history, converting the extra-point to become the first female player to appear as well as score in a CIAC Football Championship game.

Xavier mishandled the ensuing kickoff and NFA was back in business on a short field. Paparelli capped the 20-yard drive with a six-yard scoring strike to Caruso and all of a sudden the game had gone from blowout to an actual contest.

It concerned Marinan, who felt like he had seen this movie already this season and it didn't turn out well for the Falcons.

"I was concerned because they had all the momentum going into the half and I was getting flashbacks to the Hand game," Marinan said. "That's exactly what I talked about in the locker room."

The message got through to the Falcons, who came out and dominated the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 28-0. Berry scored on a 4-yard run to make it 28-14 and added a 25-yard run in the fourth to put Xavier on top 41-14 with 10:21 to go.

Kris Luster and Andrew Meoli also ran for scores in the second half for Xavier, which did not attempt a pass in the second half. They didn't need to.

"It's a surreal feeling. The fact that we won three state championships in a row is a great accomplishment," Berry said. 'It's a great way to end my high school career. We had the advantage up front with the offensive line and it was great getting all those touches with the holes the offensive line was opening."

With Berry and the ground game rolling, Boyle finished 2-of-5 for 109 yards and a TD. He didn't have to do too much but he added 35 yards rushing and capped his career with another title.

"I'm just going to enjoy this, this is a great time for out team. We won states three years in a row and I couldn't be happier," Boyle said. "I'm just so proud of our guys. It was DeAngelo's night and our offensive line, they all played great."

Especially in the second half, when the Falcons truly asserted themselves and made sure Marinan wouldn't have to watch a sequal of the Hand game, Xavier's only loss this season.

"I said you've got 24 minutes to go out there and earn this one and we have to get a stop, get our offense the ball and we've got to score some points," Marinan said.

"One thing I said is this is exactly where we were with Hand and we didn't come out of the locker room. I said remember that feeling because there are no next weeks, whatever happens, that feeling is going to last for the rest of your lives."

And thanks to Berry and Boyle, it's a championship feeling.
