Joe Melillo ran for 124 yards, scored three touchdowns and had three interceptions to lift top-seeded Pomperaug-Southbury to a 30-7 win over No. 2 Branford 30-7 at McDougall Stadium.

Mike Kielt ran for 190 yards and a touchdown, had a game-high 14 tackles including a sack as the Panthers won their first state football title.

Branford, which ran for 589 yards in a 56-14 semifinal victory over Platt-Meriden, was held to 89 yards rushing on 26 carries and 194 yards of total offense.

Melillo was named the game most valuable player for Pomperaug (13-0).

Kyle Morrison, who had nine tackles and an interception, was named the MVP for Branford (11-1).

SOUTHBURY - Senior Mike Kielt ran for 182 yards and four touchdowns to lead the undefeated Pomperaug High football team to a 42-14 win over Bunnell of Stratford in the CIAC Class MM semifinals Tuesday night in Southbury.

Senior Joe Melillo ran for 163 yards and a touchdown to lead the Panthers (12-0), who will meet Branford - a 56-14 sermifinal winner over Platt of Meriden - Saturday in the championship game at a site to be determined.

Senior quarterback Paul Mastrantuone connected with Andrew MacDougall on a 17-yard touchdown pass for Pomperaug.
Jonathan Hill scored on a 57-yard touchdown in the third quarter for Bunnell (8-2-1) and Michael Crumpton scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Stephen Halas and Tim Rose had interceptions for Pomperaug will be making its first appearance in the final after semifinal losses in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

Craig Kenney ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 114 yards and another score to lift host Branford to a 56-14 win over Platt-Meriden in the Class MM semifinals Tuesday.

Kyle Morrison ran for 124 yards, 96 coming on the first play of the second half and four touchdowns for Branford (11-0) which ran for 569 yards and had 683 yards of total offense.

Mike Shorter ran for 161 yards including a 78-yard touchdown for Platt (8-3) while Matt Arthur and Mark Steele teamed up on a 64-yard touchdown for the Panthers' other touchdown.
