WEST HAVEN -- Led by Senior Mario Guererro and junior quarterback Chris Sloat (6 for 20, 90 yards), Bunnell scored on three straight possessions in the second quarter to take a 22-0 halftime lead, then withstood a furious second-half Masuk rally to earn a 22-14 victory and its second consecutive Class L championship Saturday night at Ken Strong Stadium.

Sloat hit senior receiver Sam Stringfellow, who shook off several tackles in the middle of the field, for a 48-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Guerrero raced 12 yards for another touchdown with 6 minutes remaining. With 4 seconds left in the quarter, Jon Jackson caught an off-balance, 21-yard scoring pass from Sloat for a 22-0 halftime lead. To that point Masuk had just 21 total yards (18 rushing, 3 passing). Though Masuk's defense held Bunnell in check, its offense still couldn't produce in the third quarter.

Guererro sacked Masuk quarterback Bobby Baker to all but deflate a furious second-half Masuk rally and ran for 49 yards and scored a touchdown to earn his team's MVP award. Until Guerrero's sack, Masuk was on a serious roll, having rallied around Baker. He completed 13-of-15 passes for 151 yards as Masuk pulled within eight points on touchdown runs from Alex Trump and Niko Guerrera and recovered an onsides kick on the Bunnell 48 with 4:07 remaining.

TRUMBULL--Quarterback Chris Sloat ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw another to lead Bunnell to a 28-12 victory over Staples in the Class L semifinals Tuesday night.

Bunnell will play Masuk, a 25-21 winner over Conard, in the other semifinal. Bunnell has already defeated Masuk twice this season. Sloat, a junior first-year starter, completed 14-for-35 passes for 124 yards, and scored on runs of 4 and 14 yards to give Bunnell a 20-14 halftime lead.

Staples, which had gone to five straight championship games, scored on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Mike Samela to Zach Frimet in the first quarter and later got a 2-yard touchdown run from Hampus Hellermark.

But the Wreckers, who had lost to Bunnell in last year's Class L final, managed just two first downs in the second half.

Bunnell put the game away on a 10-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Mario Guerrero.
