GREENWICH -- The Cardinals' defense forced Central's run-oriented offense into four crucial turnovers, three of which turned into touchdowns, as the defending Class LL champions moved back into the championship game with a pounding 35-13 victory over the Hilltoppers Tuesday night before an estimated 2,500 at Cardinal Stadium.

Jim Dunster caught touchdown passes of 23 and 25 yards from quarterback Tucker Stafford and also rushed 20 yards for another score as Greenwich (10-1) advanced into the Class LL title game against Shelton, a 21-19 winner over Southington, Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Central, whose only other appearance in the CIAC playoffs was a 59-7 loss to New Britain in 2004, ended its season at 8-2.

Stat wise, the Hilltoppers might have actually won the battle, out-rushing the Cardinals 252-229, but three huge fumbles and an interception were the difference.

SHELTON - The No. 2 Gaels withstood a furious Southington second-half run, but Shelton's three first-half touchdowns were enough to hold off the No. 3 Blue Knights 21-19 Tuesday in the Class LL semis at Finn Stadium.

It was the tale of two halves with Shelton in complete control in the first half, running the ball at will behind running backs Geoffrey Schultz (31-187) and Andre Henderson (15-98) scoring three times and tallying 267 yards of offense. Schultz had two touchdown runs and one TD pass in the game.

The Gaels first TD - a 13-yard run by Schultz - was set up by a 51-yard pass from quarterback Phillip Konopka.

Shelton's next score was aided by a muffed punt return that revived a stalled Shelton drive. The Gaels took advantage of the Blue Knights special teams' trouble with Schultz pounding in another score, this time from 11 yards to make it 14-0.

The Gaels third score touchdown came on a direct snap Schultz who found receiver James Liddel in the end zone to give Shelton a commanding 21-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Southington scored a badly needed touchdown on its first possession with gunslinger Elliott Turek firing his first of three TD's to running back Savino Melluzzo from 15 yards to make it a 21-6 contest. On that drive Southington went 76 yards on 10 plays.

A series of Shelton second-half turnovers -- two fumbles, an interception (Matt Roncaioli), a blocked punt (Dave Badgley) and a fourth-down stop -- gave Southington ample opportunities to take control. Southington, however, did not cash in until the fourth quarter, when Turek (15-35, 196) found receiver Brett Kucharczyk for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to close the gap to 21-19.

The Southington defense gave Turek and the offense one last chance, but the drive ended with the quarterback's third interception of the game with 1:53 to play by Michael Manzo. A pair of first-down runs by Schultz sealed Shelton's Class LL championship date with Greenwich.
