NEW CANAAN -- New Canaan's defense shut out Middletown on their last night at home and the Rams earned a shot at defending their Class MM state title with a 28-0 semifinal victory Tuesday night over the Blue Dragons (8-3).

New Canaan quarterback Charlie Westfal completed 18 of 27 passes for 234 yards to add to his gaudy totals for the 2007 season (2,294 yards). The defensive play of Steve Johnson, however, gave the Rams (9-2) a boost after a scoreless first quarter. Johnson recovered a fumble in the end zone for the game's first points and later blocked a punt that resulted in a safety.

Middletown's star running back, Lorenzo Baker, rushed 20 times for 96 yards, 71 of which came in the first half. New Canaan's Ted Finan rushed the ball 18 times for 73 yards. Chris Sciarretta ran the ball 13 times for 63 yards, including a one-yard score in the second quarter.

Westfal added an eight-yard run and tossed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Kilbane in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

New Canaan returns to defend its Class MM championship, which it won last year with a 53-21 victory over Maloney.
