Middletown - Harold Cooper ran for 156 yards and scored three touchdowns Sunday and Hillhouse advanced to the Class M championship game with a 48-26 win over Montville.

It is the sixth state championship game appearance in school history for the Academics (10-2).

Cooper scored on runs of 14 and 67 yards and also caught a 29-yard touchdown pass.

Quarterback Je'Vaughn Moore threw for 115 yards and two scores for Hillhouse. Darryn Horner caught a 28-yard touchdown pass and ran back an interception 52 yards for a touchdown.

"I'm very proud of the kids," Hillhouse coach Tom Dyer said. "Our offense really stepped up and made plays when we needed it."

Jeremiah Crowley ran for 246 yards and three scores for Montville (9-3).

"Hillhouse is an amazing team," Montville coach Tanner Grove said. "I think Cooper is the fastest kid I've ever seen in person."

Montville took a 6-0 lead, going 68 yards on its first possession, highlighted by Crowley's 1-yard run.

Hillhouse responded with three straight scores, the first of which was Moore's 31-yard run to make it 7-6. Hillhouse recovered the ensuing kickoff and scored in five plays. Facinete Haidara's 2-run run made it 14-6.

Cooper scored on a 14-yard run to make it 21-6, a drive set up by Moore's 58-yard completion to Andre Anderson.

Montville made it 21-12 on Crowley's 6-yard run, but Cooper's 67-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds left in the half to make it 28-12.

Hillhouse scored twice early in the third period, a 28-yard touchdown reception for Darryn Horner, followed by Horner's 52-yard intereption return.

Montville quarterback Nick Clemons scored on a 2-yard gain to make it 42-20 before Moore hit Cooper with a 29-yard scoring pass.

Crowley finished the scoring with an 82-yard touchdown run.

#2 Berlin 21
#6 Weston 7
at Bunnell, 5:00pm on December 2

STRATFORD - Mitch Williams threw two touchdown passed and the Berlin defense never let Weston get going as the Redcoats advanced to the Class M title game with a 21-7 victory over the Trojans on Sunday night at Bunnell High School.

Berlin (11-1), making its second straight appearance in the Class M semifinals, will meet Hillhouse (10-2) in the championship game Friday or Saturday at Rentschler Field. The Academics will be making their sixth state championship game appearance after knocking off Montville, 48-26, in the other Class M semifinal.

The Redcoats scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters and kept the Trojans' option offense under wraps most of the night.

"It would mean everything to us, it was out goal and we set our sights on a championship when the season started," Williams said. "Our defense was great tonight and now we have one more game to go for a title."

Williams put Berlin on top on the game's first drive. Facing a third-and-nine at the Weston 38, Williams found Tom Undercuffler behind the defense for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead just 1:17 into the game.

"Defense wins championships and we knew coming into the game we were going to have to be perfect to advance and tonight they were near perfect," Berlin coach John Capodice said. "We prepared all week for their option, I don't know if I slept all week. We knew it was going to be assignment football and that we had to stop Hassett and Schaffer and the kids did a terrific job."

Berlin extended its lead to 14-0 on the second play of the second quarter when Kevin Main plowed in on first-and-goal from the four. That was the lead at the half as Weston had a drive end inside the Berlin 20 on a fumble and at the Berlin 35 on downs.

The Trojans (9-3) got new life after the break, taking the opening possession of the third quarter and marching 55 yards in five plays to cut the deficit in half, 14-7. Weston quarterback Tyler Hassett capped the drive with a four yard TD run just under three minutes into the quarter and the Trojans were back in the game.

But that would be as close as Weston could get as Berlin kept grinding out yards on the ground and then hit the Trojans for one more big play to put the game away.

Williams threw his second TD pass of the game with 2:25 left in the third quarter when he found Scott McLeod on a middle screen that McLeod took to the house for a 52-yard touchdown to make it 21-7.

Aside from his reception TD, McLeod sparked Berlin's punishing ground game, more than making up for the absence of fellow senior running back Justin Gombotz, who was injured in Berlin's quarterfinal victory over Bullard-Havens.

The Redcoats' ability to run the ball helped the defense as the Trojans' possessions were limited and Hassett and company just never got into a flow with their option attack.

"We knew they were going challenge us physically and we were concerned with their physicality and their size," Weston coach Joe Lato said. "We got it into the fourth quarter and had a chance and the kids fought hard but it just felt like we never had the ball and couldn't get into a rhythm on offense."

Despite the loss, Lato was proud of his team, especially this year's group of seniors who led the Trojans to the first state playoff victory in program history.

"These seniors have been great," an emotional Lato said. "You don't know, you have to be with us every day and see how special they are. They are going to be great leaders and are amazing kids."

EAST HARTFORD - Harold Cooper scored on a 3-yard run with 2:43 left in the third quarter, and Je'Vaughn Moore's point after kick gave the Hillhouse football team the lead for good, as the fourth-seeded Academics rallied in the second half to win the Class M state title with a 34-12 victory over No. 2 Berlin Saturday at Rentschler Field.

It was the second title in three years, and fifth overall for Hillhouse (11-2). The Academics defeated New London 7-0 in the final in 2010. Hillhouse defeated Berlin in the quarterfinals on the road to that championship.

"It feels better than the first one," Cooper said.

Berlin (11-2) lead 12-6 at halftime. However, the Red Coats decided to go for a 4th-and-inches at their own 23 with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Berlin came up short, and the Academics took over. That defensive stand set up the winning score, with Cooper scoring five plays into the ensuing drive.

"When you're in this situation, and you're a significant underdog, you got to try to pull out all the tricks," Berlin coach John Capodice said.

Said Cooper: "I was very surprised that they didn't punt the ball. But, hey, that's what they do, and we knew we had to stop them on that down, and that's what we did. We played Hillhouse football, and we stopped them."

Cooper finished with 88 yards on 19 carries. He also caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Moore, and added a 6-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Moore rushed eight times for 106 yards, including a 62-yard score in the final quarter. Andre Anderson scored on a 20-yard run for the Academics.

Kevin Main caught a touchdown pass from Mitch Williams for Berlin, while Wojtus Zak scored on a 1-yard run in the first half. Scott McLeod gained a team-high 71 yards on 19 carries.
