West Haven -- The Hand of Madison football team gave head coach Steve Filippone his 200th win Sunday.

The Tigers also gave themselves a chance to defend their CIAC Class L championship.

Hand scored the first five times it touched the ball as it rolled to a 42-23 win over Masuk of Monroe in a semifinal game at Ken Strong Stadium.

"It's something special," Tigers' quarterback Brendan Bilcheck said. "Not many coaches get the opportunity to do that, and there's no better guy who deserves to get their 200th win than him."

It was the 26th consecutive win for top-seeded Hand (12-0).

"I didn't win a game," Filippone said. "I've never won a game. ... I really take no great satisfaction in it. I take satisfaction in that this team has won 26 games in a row."

Bilcheck completed 13 of 21 passes for 259 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His leading receiver was Caleb Ewald (five catches, 145 yards, two touchdowns).

Ian O'Toole ran 10 times for 69 yards and three scores for the Tigers while Conor Dowd added 16 carries for 114 yards and a score.

Malik Cummings completed 18 of 23 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown for fourth-seeded Masuk (10-2). Thomas Milone scored on a 70-yard kickoff return, had six catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, and threw a 33-yard pass.

The Tigers scored on their first play of the game. Bilcheck threw a screen to Ewald, who took it for a 74-yard touchdown.

"We didn't get off to the start we wanted," Panthers coach John Murphy said. "The crazy conditions right there at the beginning (the fog), they throw a screen, and my kid who's supposed to defend it never even saw the ball in the air. But they took it to us on both sides of the ball in the first half."

O'Toole ran for touchdowns of 2 and 5 yards in the first quarter. He ran 26 yards for another touchdown in the second quarter.

Bilcheck threw a 56-yard touchdown to Ewald as the Tigers went ahead, 35-0, with over five minutes left in the first half.

STRATFORD - Quarterback Rob Fleeting Jr. threw for one touchdown and ran for another as No. 2 seed Windsor hung on for a 27-21 win over No. 6 New Canaan Sunday at Bunnell High School in a rematch of last year's CIAC Class L semifinal.

Devonte Dillon scored both of his touchdowns in the second half for the Warriors (12-0). But New Canaan (9-3) scored all three touchdowns in the second half as it tried to rally into the Class L final just like a year ago.

Louis Hagopian scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Then Michael DiCosmo ran back a fumble return 79 yards for another touchdown to make it a 6-point game with 47.3 seconds left.

"I can't ask any more from the kids," New Canaan coach Lou Marinelli said. "I can't say enough about the effort and the never-say-die attitude these kids had."

But Dillon recovered the ensuing onsides kick and Windsor survived three second-half turnovers.

"You still have to understand that turnovers are going to happen," Windsor coach Rob Fleeting Sr., said. "I think the difference last year was when turnovers and penalties happened, we tried to go to different things in the playbook and there was no consistency to what we were trying to do. This year, we knew what we were going to try to do. We needed to run the ball, and I think it showed in the second half."

Fleeting went 13-of-20 passing for 132 yards, but never attempted a pass after the early stages of the third quarter. He tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Ryheime Moore in the second quarter and scored on a 1-yard run in the opening quarter.

Windsor held New Canaan to negative yardage in the first quarter. New Canaan was attempting to reach its seventh straight state final.

"We lost to a better team, believe me," Marinelli said. "They deserve to go and play in a state championship. We did not play well enough to be in a state championship."

East Hartford -- Hand of Madison didn't make any changes trailing Windsor by three points at halftime of Saturday's CIAC Class L final.

"No adjustments in the first or second half," Tigers senior quarterback Brendan Bilcheck said. "What happened is we just outphysicaled them."

Hand scored 23 unanswered points as it beat the Warriors, 23-6, to repeat as Class L champions before 5,189 at Rentschler Field.

It was the 11th state title for the Tigers (13-0). They rank second to only Ansonia (18) in state titles.

Hand was ranked No. 1 in both The Day of New London Top 10 state coaches' poll and the New Haven Register Top 10 media poll. It will likely finish with the top ranking.

Bilcheck ran 14 times for 82 yards and a touchdown. He also completed 15 of 25 passes for 141 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Caleb Ewald (eight catches, 74 yards, 1 touchdown) was Hand's leading receiver. Matt Walsh had 15 tackles and Daniel Rogers returned a fumble for a 42-yard touchdown.

Robert Quinn Fleeting completed 11 of 27 passes for 131 yards with a touchdown and interception for Windsor (11-1).

"They're (the Tigers) a very good football team," Warriors head coach Robert Fleeting said. "Things just got away from us offensively. We couldn't get into a rhythm. Our defensive was just on the field a little bit too long."

Robert Quinn Fleeting found Ryheime Moore wide-open in the back left corner of the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown with more than eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Peter Gerson blocked the extra point as the Warriors took a 6-0 lead.

Tyler Phan kicked a 27-yard field goal to end the first half and cut Windsor's lead to 6-3.

Bilcheck threw a short pass to Ewald, who took it for a 23-yard touchdown with over eight minutes left in the third quarter. Phan's extra point gave Hand a 10-6 lead.

On Windsor's next possession, Rogers scooped up a fumble and returned it for a 42-yard touchdown. Phan's extra point pushed Hand ahead, 16-6, with five minutes, 43 seconds left in the third quarter.

"I think that broke their back, to be honest with you," Tigers' coach Steve Filippone said. "I think it would break most any team's back."

Bilcheck added a 4-yard touchdown run with over a minute left in the first quarter to push the Tigers' advantage to 23-6.
